When it comes to spooky-season, there is nothing we love more than a sweet treat. To honor Dîa de Los Muertos, we’ve reimagined the tradition of making and decorating calaveras, aka sugar skulls.

Prep time: 5 min | Cook time: 7 min

Ingredients

  • Your favorite La Tortilla Factory tortillas; we think our flour tortillas work best in this one!
  • Smashmallow Cinnamon Churro marshmallows (you can also make your own using regular marshmallows and a 3:1 ration of sugar to cinnamon)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Icing, in various colors
  • Optional: sprinkles and other small candies to decorate

Directions

Pre-heat your oven to 375°. Use a skull-shaped cookie cutter to cut two shapes from tortillas. Depending on the size of your cookie cutter and which tortilla size you are using, you may be able to get multiple shapes from one tortilla.

Melt a tablespoon of butter at a time on a hot skillet and place tortillas in the pan, heating each side until they start to bubble and are browned. Keep your eye out, this is a quick process, and only takes about 15 -30 seconds each side. Remove from pan and let rest on a paper towel-lined plate.

Using a sharp knife, cut marshmallows into halves or quarters. Transfer slightly cooled tortilla skull to a foil-lined cookie sheet and arrange marshmallows on top. Top with another skull tortilla, pressing down gently.

Bake in the oven for approximately 3-minutes or just long enough to slightly melt the marshmallows and crisp the tortillas.

Serve immediately or cool and decorate with icing and sprinkles to create your very own (and delicious) sugar skull.
